Global InfoAnalytics Executive Director, Mussa Dankwah, says the NPP should not treat Chairman Wontumi’s imprisonment as a political advantage, arguing that his situation cannot be compared to that of former South African President Nelson Mandela.

He cautioned that electing Wontumi as NPP National Chairman while he is in prison could make it more difficult for the party to rebuild and improve its chances of winning the next general election.

Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM last week, Dankwah said the NPP needed strong leadership and a clear strategy following its defeat in the 2024 general election.

“I don't think he will win… Because you see, the NPP needs a direction. They need to find a way to win the next election. Electing Wontumi from prison will not make that possible. They should be realistic about these things. Wontumi is not Mandela,” he stated.

Dankwah said the party should focus on winning back voters rather than using Wontumi’s imprisonment to make a political statement.

He also said Ghanaian voters had changed, with nearly 70% now having at least a senior high school education.

According to him, such voters are demanding a different kind of politics and leadership from political parties.

He said the NPP had already lost support among highly educated voters and needed to work harder to regain their trust.

Dankwah further warned that electing Wontumi from prison might not help the party attract such voters.

His comments come after Wontumi’s campaign team picked up nomination forms for him to contest the NPP National Chairmanship position despite his imprisonment.

Dankwah believes the NPP should choose leaders who can help rebuild the party, reconnect with voters and strengthen its chances of returning to power.
