Former Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Atiwa East, Abena Osei-Asare, has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expecting a response from President John Dramani Mahama following the presentation of a petition during the party's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration on Thursday, August 6, 2026.

Speaking at the demonstration grounds in Accra, Osei-Asare said the petition was intended to draw the President's attention to what the party believes are growing concerns about governance and democratic accountability in the country.

According to her, the NPP deemed it necessary to formally communicate its concerns to the President and urge him to take action.

"We are asking the President to look at the situation because things are not being done right. As citizens of this nation, we need to let him know, just in case he is not aware or just in case those around him are not telling him the truth," she stated.

The Atiwa East MP further argued that the country's current situation requires decisive leadership, insisting that the President must intervene to address the concerns raised by the opposition party.

"Clearly, things have gone haywire and he needs to put his foot down and do the right thing. That's all we are asking of him," she said.

Osei-Asare expressed confidence that President Mahama would respond to the petition, describing such a response as the hallmark of responsible leadership.

"We are waiting for him to respond and that is what a responsible President should do. We know he will do it and we are waiting for his response," she added.

The comments came during the NPP's "Democracy Under Attack" demonstration, which drew hundreds of party supporters and sympathisers to the streets of Accra.

The protest, according to the NPP, was organized to defend civil liberties, the rule of law, and democratic accountability. Demonstrators marched from the vicinity of the Supreme Court to the Jubilee House, where party leaders presented a petition outlining concerns about what they describe as threats to Ghana's democratic governance.

The demonstration also received support from several allied groups, including the Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), which joined the protest in solidarity with the NPP.
