The Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has described President John Dramani Mahama as the "principal beneficiary of free speech" in Ghana, arguing that the President extensively exercised his right to criticize the previous administration while in opposition.

Speaking on Good Afternoon Ghana on Metro TV, Asante alleged that Mahama made several strong public criticisms of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his time in opposition and encouraged members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to speak out against the then-government.

According to Asante, the current administration has taken a different approach since assuming office by arresting individuals who criticize the government.

He argued that such actions undermine Ghanaians' fundamental rights, stressing that citizens should be free to express their views and hold the government accountable whenever they believe the country is not being governed effectively.

Asante made the remarks in connection with the NPP's planned peaceful demonstration on August 6, which the party says will proceed despite the government's memorial ceremony for victims of the recent military helicopter crash.

The NPP maintains that the demonstration is intended to defend democratic freedoms, including the right to free expression and peaceful assembly.
