Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Inusah Fuseini has rejected a government-backed proposal to extend Ghana’s presidential term from four to five years, arguing that the country should prioritise improving government efficiency rather than lengthening tenures.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, August 3, 2026, Fuseini stated that he remains unconvinced by arguments in favour of the change.
"I don't agree to the five-year extension. No one has told me why we need five years for a president. Until someone convinces me that it will be more efficient if we have five years, then I will not go by it,” he said.
The proposal forms part of recommendations from the Constitution Review Committee that the government has accepted.

According to the committee, a longer term would give administrations more time for effective governance, as the first year of a four-year cycle is often spent setting up the government while election activities dominate the final year.
Fuseini dismissed this rationale.
The Constitution Review Committee’s recommendations cover multiple aspects of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.
The government has accepted the five-year term proposal for both the presidency and Parliament, with the change intended to apply only to future officeholders. Any constitutional amendments would still require parliamentary approval and a national referendum.
Fuseini acknowledged the broader value of constitutional review, noting that constitutions should evolve to meet changing societal needs, but maintained that extending the presidential term is not the solution to governance challenges.
