The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected calls for the state to fund the internal elections of political parties.

Speaking in an interview on Eyewitness News, monitored by GhanaWeb on July 29, 2026, the NDC’s Deputy Director of IT and Elections, Rashid Tanko Computer, said the party would not support the use of state resources to finance political party elections.

According to him, the government has more pressing national priorities that require urgent attention, arguing that funding political parties should not even be a subject of public debate.

He maintained that political parties should be capable of financing their own internal elections and questioned why taxpayers’ money should be used for that purpose.

“The NDC will not subscribe to it. Why would the state use state resources when we have a lot of challenges across the country? Accra floods and all these things are worrying us. In the educational sector, we are looking for money to end double-track.

“We are looking at the health sector; there are a lot of pressing needs, including opening up our road networks across the country,” he said.

Rashid Tanko Computer further argued that any political party unable to organise and fund its own internal elections should cease to exist.

“If you’re a party and you can’t organise yourself, fold up. If they can’t organise, then they should fold up. They shouldn’t bring that. That should not be something for discussion at all. Why should the state do that?” he added.

His comments come on the back of a recent Supreme Court ruling, delivered by a 5–2 majority, which held that the delegate system used by political parties to elect their presidential and parliamentary candidates is inconsistent with democratic principles.
