Communications team member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Miracles Dennis Aboagye, has made remarks that have sparked reactions on social media.

In a video posted on X and sighted by GhanaWeb on July 22, 2026, Miracles Aboagye, speaking during a discussion on UTV, said NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, contributed to his own predicament.

According to him, Chairman Wontumi’s public utterances while the NPP was in power are a major reason behind his current 20-year prison sentence.

“We all know that the reason why Chairman Wontumi is in jail isn’t because of galamsey but because of his own mouth. As for Chairman Wontumi being used as a scapegoat for a political party, we knew that was going to happen. He is a political prisoner,” he said.

Miracles Dennis Aboagye further argued that Chairman Wontumi was not sentenced to 20 years in prison because of illegal mining activities alone, but also due to statements he made against the NDC several years ago.

“We all know that Chairman Wontumi is a scapegoat unless you don’t want to accept the truth.

“He’s in jail because of politics. He’s a political prisoner. I doubt he would have been in there if he wasn’t Chairman Wontumi. There are a lot of galamsey operators, so why haven’t they been jailed?” he added.

His comments come after Chairman Wontumi was sentenced to 20 years' imprisonment after an Accra High Court found him guilty on all six counts in the illegal mining case involving Akonta Mining Company Limited.
