An explosive political controversy surrounding Ghana’s ongoing power crisis has taken a dramatic turn after a former New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament denied claims that he and other NPP MPs in the Ashanti Region paid Electricity Company of Ghana officials to deliberately keep communities in darkness.

The allegation, which emerged in a viral social media video and was reportedly amplified by a radio and television station, accused the MPs of secretly meeting ECG District Directors and offering them money to sustain the worsening power outages commonly referred to as dumsor.

But in a strongly worded response, former Manhyia South lawmaker Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh dismissed the claims as “entirely false, malicious, and without any basis in fact,” warning that legal action is already underway against both the media house involved and the presenter behind the allegations.

“I have instructed my lawyers to commence the necessary legal processes to compel them to substantiate these allegations with credible evidence or face the full consequences of the law,” the statement said.

The controversy comes at a sensitive time as many parts of Ghana continue to experience erratic power supply, fueling public frustration and political tension.

According to the former MP, the country’s energy challenges should not be used as a tool for political propaganda.

“At a time when Ghanaians are confronted with serious challenges in the power sector, the focus should be on providing lasting solutions and not manufacturing falsehoods and smear narratives,” he stated.

The statement is expected to intensify debate over the politicisation of Ghana’s energy crisis as pressure mounts on the government to address the recurring outages.
