Ghana’s former President, Flt. Lt Jerry John Rawlings, has expressed concern about the “lightheaded” manner religious, social and political matters are portrayed by sections of the media.
He said the practice has contributed to dehumanize and make Ghanaians superficial. “We are doing too much politics with the truth,” he stated.
“Some of us have very little understanding into human nature or into the power of God and yet we want to propagate issues to do with God and godliness and we are reducing the substance and spiritual essence in our humanity,” the former President said at a meeting with the leadership of the Afrikania Mission in Accra on Tuesday.
The formerPresident described as perpetuation of decay, the situation where the mediahighlight shallow discourse on religion, politics and social issues especially on radio and television. “For the average mind once the TV or radio station carries it then it’s okay. The lightheadedness of what we see or what we hear is degrading us.”
President Rawlings also took a swipe at the NDC for re-invigorating the class structure. “We the liberators [NDC] have ended up perpetuating a class rule in this country. The PNDC/NDC came to liberate us but the same NDC from Mills’ time to now have ended up restoring and perpetuating the class structure.”
The PNDC, the former President said, was an expression of the will of the people. “As the Head of State and leader I was not unaware of the aspirations and sensibilities of our people. When somebody wants to replace our culture with another then it better be good and better than what we have but in the name of freedom of worship and expression all manner of foolish things are allowed.”
Flt Lt Rawlings recalled that in 1979 having read an article by Bishop Sarpong recognizing the value of libation, he invited him to join the AFRC. He said he was impressed that an orthodox Catholic priest could recognize the value of libation but the Catholic hierarchy at the time declined the request.
“We should show a little more sense, a little more responsibility when it comes to our relationship with God. What is important is that religion must show a sense of compassion, love and respect for one another. But to take a position that disrespects issues to do with our ancestors is not good enough,” the former President said.
Earlier the Afrikania Mission, led by its Head of Mission, Osofo Komfo Atsu Kove had expressed disquiet about the relegation of African traditional religion at the national level. They bemoaned the refusal of government to allow pouring of libation at national events and said it was a clear manifestation of the authorities’ lack of reverence for our ancestors.
The Mission said despite several entreaties to resume the pouring of libation at national events because it is our culture, government has for the past eight years turned adeaf ear. Government’s action is provocative and tacitly endorses the attack on traditional shrines and icons by adherents of imported religion, the Mission stated.
The Afrikania Mission said it was unfortunate that at a time when questions are being raised about the lack of recognition of certain religious practices in schools, African traditional religion is described as pagan, idol worship and backward in textbooks.
The group said it was imperative that we sowed seeds of religious tolerance while respecting the right of adherents of African traditional religion to practice their culture.

These are all plans aimed at suppressing Christianity to please the OIC. These are all indicators that Mahama is feverishly handing over Ghana to the Organisation of Islamic Countries for Money. We should remember Islam is useless without direct state support and so Mahama is providing that support to Muslims to grow in Ghana whilst at the same time suppressing Christians. very popular for the simple reason that both despite military regimes were sympathetic towards the low socio-economic class.The revolution of course was necessitated by the cheating and exploitation at the time by few rich but corrupt oligarchs and can only be naturally in tune with the majority poor.It is not for nothing people talk about the Founder winning election in this country any time,any day but for the constitutional constraints limiting presidency to 2 terms.Some people have sort to indict the Founder as being corrupt and often accused him of hypocrisy on the topic of corruption in governance.No human being can claim absolute Piety in a world that is not ideal.Critics of the Founder are quick to point to his wife Nana Konadu of amassing wealth through some dubious and scandalous deals in the past.The Nsawam Canary vividly comes into mind in this regard but let's not forget the former first lady was cleared of charges of corruption in court.In other words it was legitimately acquired.Assuming without admitting the former first lady is in deed corrupt it does not make sense to condemn the Founder a different personality as corrupt just because he is the husband.Relatives and of course spouses have used the high office of president in dubious and scandalous deals all over the world not necessarily with the president's knowledge.I am yet to see evidence of Jerry Rawlings corruption compared to other politicians,former presidents and ministers alike both in NDC and NPP merely by the litany of sophisticated mansions and multi-million dollar businesses owned.I just made a point about unscrupulous deals occurring in government without the leader or president's knowledge and of course the Founder himself by this very comment have invariably admitted to this rather belatedly.The biggest problem of any leader particularly revolutionary leaders has to do with how to deal with traitors,hypocrites,opportunists and infiltrators who may not necessarily believe in the objective or ideals of the revolution.For the ideals of a revolution to survive,you need committed loyalists.Unfortunately that is not the case with the PNDC .Suffice to say the NDC is a social democratic party built on the tenets of the revolution of probity,accountability and integrity.As a boy child with the boy's scout brigade,CDR/PDC groups it was in fact an abomination for some body to think about theft(refined as corruption) let alone act.White collar criminals in public institutions today looting millions of Ghana Cedis(billions in old cedis)with impunity were an extremely rare side because the PNDC regime made it very unattractive with dire consequences if caught.Crony capitalism and attendant corruption have given way to the social democratic credentials of a party that previously stood for social justice merely because of greedy,self centered,dishonest and disloyal gurus pretending to be socialists believing in the ideals of a socialist leader.Many of the northern political elite plucked from relative obscurity by the Founder exemplify this.We know of northern MPs in parliament since 1992 and holding various portfolios who have become immensely wealthy,excessively powerful but also filthy corrupt,oppressive and brutish against their poverty riddled constituents.Despite being direct beneficiaries of the Founder's quest to bridge the social gap between the deprived north and the south,they have not been any way useful as members of a social democratic party in realizing the urgent developmental needs of northern Ghana still largely marginalized apart from their immediate selfish,gullible needs.Alban Bagbin readily comes into mind in this regard.Alban Bagbin ironically one of the avowed critic of the president and some young politicians he supposedly nurtured is one hell of a filthy corrupt and vindictive politician.He has become filthy wealthy and excessively powerful from relatively obscure background but has now become a feared invisible demagogue in the upper west region through diabolic schemes and tyranny to have more expansive powers.This is somebody who own mansions and multi-million businesses including micro-finance companies throughout the country.He is currently privately mining gold and degrading the land in Nadowli without any compensation for his people whiles millions of Ghana cedis is made.He dubiously confiscated the family land of a doctor he orchestrated his sacking from the Ghana Health Service for a vast mango and maize plantation in Welembele without any compensation for his illiterate uncle used as a cash cow in his multi-million plantation scheme.Why this man will persistently engage in callous schemes targeted at destroying the youth in upper west just to have strangle president of Ghana.President Mahama despite all the criticism is by far a humane person with conscience, empathy and feeling for fellow mankind.I personally think his government is suffering in part because of his openness in the spirit of democracy and political tolerance.I have always made the argument that military regimes are the best for third world African countries at least if for nothing at all but for the sake of checking corruption by nation wreckers draining the country dry.Other wise democratically elected governments should be committed to stern anti-graft measures to serve as deterrents to both high profile politicians and civil servants who often connive to dub the country. The Mahama government may just be a victim of a corrupt system.Nevertheless,the NDC own an obligation to this country as a social democratic party to make corruption and crass opulence with impunity unattractive in the interest of the majority poor masses who have been committed over the years in believing and repeatedly endorsing the party during national elections.The NDC as a party does not need dreaded strict sanctions like straight death warrant pertaining to Communist China that have made graft in that country a thing of the past yielding massive dividend in China's developmental progress.Political commitment and support in implementing a National Anti-corruption Plan is a must for a social democratic party like the NDC who are supposed to stand for social justice. The party itself should take its ideals with reference to the antecedent ideals of the PNDC serious to make good its policy as a social democratic party not to let loyalists believe they have been fooled and cheated judging by what we see today particularly from so-called gurus of the party.That is why i laugh quietly in my heart when i see opportunists and sycophants walking around with NDC membership cards for contracts and other favors claiming they are party loyalists.The true loyalists are those who believe in the ideals of the NDC as a social democratic party who understand the revolutionary antecedence of the PNDC.The current NDC is already suffering the effects of corruption and impunity,perceived or real with a looming danger of losing the 2016 election on the same charges if care is not taken.President Mahama should hold steadfast the ideals of a social democratic party by empowering the majority poor masses economically particularly the grassroots of the party if there is an intention of winning in 2016.They are the loyalists,the work horses,the catalyst of the party who will be with him in rain or sun and not betray him in 2016.The secret of the NDC success over the NPP is that it is traditionally the favorite party of the majority poor and any deviation from that will be a regrettable political suicide.
