It saddens my heart when I hear such news report. In fact this should be no news. It should rather be a requirement that every student in a tertiary institution should have the opportunity to have such an internship. In Ghana, we have failed to connect industry with classroom work such that our engineers are all good on paper but lack serious understanding when it comes to application of knowledge in their chosen field. Why do we still need foreign companies to construct our roads ?, how come an electrical engineer trained in Ghana can not fix a basic electrical problem. In the USA people are so handy it is amazing. Some without any college education are able to build their own houses, fix their electrical problems, paint their houses, build their own furniture, repair their own computers, build their own wells. We need more collaboration between industry and education and in fact it should be a requirement. It is amazing when a geology student knows everything about the different types of rocks but has never set an eye on any of them.
