Scrap dealers stealing GWCL water metres in Kumasi

The Ghana Water Company Limited in the Ashanti Region has urged its customers to be very vigilant and look out for suspicious people who may attempt to tamper with water metres.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the company, Sampson Ampah said that a suspected stealing syndicate has started taking away metres from some residences in parts of Kumasi.

Mr Sampah pointed accusing fingers at scrap dealers who move from one place to the other looking for anything metallic to sell as the main suspects.

The Deputy PRO mentioned Asokwa, a suburb of Kumasi, where four water metres have been stolen recently, giving cause for concern and vigilance by both the Ghana Water Company and its customers to curtail the nefarious practice.

Mr Ampah said the water metre theft has so far been reported to the police for investigations.

He also encouraged communities to form Community Watchdog Committees to provide security to complement that of the police, in order to bring the situation under control.

He encouraged customers of GWCL to report suspicious persons who may parade as officials of the company, adding that any theft of the metres must be immediately reported to the nearest police station not only for the culprits to be tracked, but also for replacement of the stolen metres.
