A 35-year-old man and his pregnant wife have been found dead in their room at Kportorgboe, a community in Anloga in the Volta Region, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) has reported.
The deceased were identified as Daniel Agbenyegah, a mason, and his wife, Patience Awumee, aged between 29 and 30 and reportedly seven months pregnant, according to the GNA report.
Edwin Kwasi Vedzi, assembly member for the Anloga Kportorgbe Electoral Area, told the agency that preliminary information suggested the man had allegedly killed his wife with a knife before taking his own life.
However, Vedzi stressed that the circumstances surrounding the deaths had not been verified and were awaiting confirmation from the police.
He said the throats of both deceased had been slashed.
According to information gathered by the assembly member, the couple travelled on Sunday to visit the wife’s parents and returned home on Monday at about 11:00 am. The incident was believed to have occurred approximately 30 minutes after their return.
The couple lived in a house belonging to the husband’s grandfather, alongside other relatives, the report said.
Neighbours reportedly said they had not noticed any altercation involving the couple, adding that they were not on speaking terms with the occupants of the house.
Vedzi said the reason for the deaths remained unknown, as there had been no known quarrel between the couple that residents or neighbours were aware of.
Police subsequently removed the bodies and deposited them at the Keta Municipal Hospital morgue for further examination and autopsy.
The assembly member urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with the police as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The cause of the deaths had not been officially confirmed at the time of the report, with further details expected after police investigations and the autopsy.
