A footage has captured the moment Ghana Police officers unearthed an AK-47 rifle allegedly buried by suspected armed robbery operatives as part of efforts to conceal weapons used in criminal activities.

In the footage, an officer dressed in plain clothes wearing a vest from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is seen digging into what appears to be farmland with a hand tool to recover the weapon.

The officer eventually pulls out a sack that had been buried underground. Inside the sack was an AK-47 rifle carefully concealed in several empty sacks and wrapped in polythene before being buried in the soil.

After removing the layers of packaging, the officer displayed the firearm, which appeared to be in relatively new condition, before wrapping it up again.

The recovery forms part of a series of intelligence-led operations conducted by the Ghana Police Service across the country to clamp down on suspected criminal activities, particularly armed robbery.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu disclosed details of the operations at a press briefing on Monday, September 7, 2026, explaining that the raids were carried out based on intelligence gathered on suspected criminal activities.

According to the IGP, the operations in the Western Region targeted a gang allegedly responsible for attacks on gold dealer shops, mining sites and communities in and around Wasa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abufo Camp and Demaso.

Five suspects were arrested during the operations, while another suspect reportedly died.

Police recovered three AK-47 rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and two vehicles from the operations.

In the Northern Region, three suspects were also arrested in connection with a series of alleged armed robberies recorded in Bupe, Tamale and Mion.

The suspects were allegedly linked to the robbery and killing of a mobile money vendor at Fufusu, near Damango Junction.

The Police further reported the death of Alaji Moro Beliko, whom they identified as the alleged mastermind behind the robbery of two mobile money vendors at Bupe Cartel Market on June 29.

The two vendors were allegedly robbed of GH¢130,000 during the incident.

The IGP also disclosed that separate intelligence-led operations conducted between June and July resulted in the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of eight AK-47 assault rifles, an SMG rifle and two foreign pistols.

The latest operations form part of the Police Service's intensified efforts to disrupt organised criminal activities, recover illicit firearms and ammunition, and apprehend persons suspected of being involved in armed robbery and other violent crimes.
