The Kpando Circuit Court has sentenced a 31-year-old woman, Stella Amedzorme, to three years' imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.

The conviction followed her guilty plea when she appeared before the court on August 3, 2026, after investigations by the Volta North Regional Police Command.

According to a Police statement issued on August 5, 2026, the incident occurred on July 17, 2026, when the baby's mother, 21-year-old Gloria Xagbe, entrusted her eight-month-old son to Amedzorme, a fellow market trader, while she briefly went to buy packaging bags.

The statement said that when the mother returned, both the convict and the child had disappeared, prompting her to report the matter to the Police.

"Acting on intelligence, Police arrested Stella Amedzorme on July 18, 2026, at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and rescued the baby," the statement said.

During investigations, Amedzorme admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently at large.

The Police said the convict was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on July 20, 2026, where she was remanded into Police custody.

She reappeared before the court on August 3, 2026, pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to three years' imprisonment.

"The Police successfully rescued the eight-month-old child unharmed, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the convict's fiancé to assist investigations," the statement added.

The Volta North Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives, particularly children, and urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant.
