A private legal practitioner, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers has sued the Attorney General over the renaming of Kotoka International Airport, arguing that the move cannot be done by government directive alone.

The case, filed at the Supreme Court of Ghana on March 13, 2026, challenges the legality of the decision and asks the court to intervene before any changes are implemented.

The plaintiff says the airport’s name is закрепed in law under the General Kotoka Trust Decree of 1969 (NLCD 339), and that only Parliament has the authority to change it.

His position is that any attempt by the Executive to rename the facility without first amending that law is invalid.

Through his lawyer, Michael Akosah, he is seeking both temporary and permanent court orders to prevent the Ministry of Transport and its agents from enforcing the new name.

The suit also argues that bypassing Parliament would go against constitutional provisions that govern how existing laws are modified.

Brako-Powers says the case is about upholding due process, insisting that legal procedures must be followed regardless of policy decisions.

The Attorney General has been given 14 days to respond after being served.
