Mechanic remanded for biting and chewing electrician's nose and lips

Accra, Feb. 7, GNA - A mechanic apprentice Amoah Sackey, who is accuse= d of biting and chewing off the nose and lips of an electrician during a scuffle on Monday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court charged with causing harm.

Sackey pleaded not guilty and the court presided over by Mrs Doris Bempong remanded him into Police custody pending further investigations. He is to re-appear on February 28.

The Police claimed accused had swallowed the nose and the lips because they had searched every where at the scene but could not find them. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Margaret Awuni told the court that the complainant was Charles Bainin who lived at Teshie. Mr Bainin has his shop at La while accused is a resident of La. On January 22, this year, at about 8:00pm, Mr Bainin closed from work and was driving his private Toyota car home. ASP Awuni said on reaching La market square Sackey alleged that the complainant had knocked him with his car.

Prosecution said the complainant stopped and when he was about to open his car door, Sackey rushed on him and pulled him out of his car. In the process, the complainant fell and Sackey jumped on him and bit off his nose and lips, as well as part of his cheek and neck. ASP Awuni said complainant was however rescued by people standing by and when the accused saw the degree of injuries of the complainant, took to his heels.

Later the prosecutor said accused was arrested and the complainant was issued with a medical form to receive medical attention. Mr Bainin who is still receiving treatment, had plaster on his nose an= d lips. The prosecutor said accused in his caution statement to the Police admitted the offence.
