The Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA), Dr Adam Bonaa, has called on Ghanaians in possession of unlicensed firearms to surrender them at the nearest police station without fear of arrest or questioning.

According to him, regardless of the nature of the firearm whether stolen, found or illegally acquired individuals who voluntarily surrender their weapons will not be arrested, interrogated or prosecuted under the ongoing Gun Amnesty Programme.

The Gun Amnesty Programme, which was launched on December 1, 2025, allows individuals to voluntarily surrender or register unregistered or illegally acquired firearms without fear of legal consequences.

The amnesty period ends on January 15, 2026.

Dr Bonaa explained that clear processes have been put in place for individuals who wish to legally register their firearms after surrendering them.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement visit to the National Mosque on December 26, 2025, the NACSA Executive Secretary confirmed the development and commended residents for their cooperation.

He urged others to take advantage of the remaining amnesty period to contribute to national peace and security.

'Attempt anything nasty and we will come after you' - Police Commander warns criminals

“No one is going to arrest you. You are not going to be prosecuted. There will be no interrogation. Even if it is a gun you stole from the police, surrender it and there will be no arrest,” he stated.

He revealed that NACSA has engaged the Chief Imam, who has agreed to serve as a Gun Amnesty Ambassador, describing him as a key figure in promoting peace and stability in Ghana.

Dr Bonaa emphasised that the campaign is being extended to churches, traditional authorities and chieftaincy institutions across the country.

He noted that the Commission has already visited parts of the Upper West Region and plans to continue engagements nationwide.

“The Chief Imam is one of the strongest pillars of peace in this country.

"He does not encourage violence or disorder, and that is why we are engaging religious leaders to help us spread this message,” he added.

He assured the public that the amnesty initiative is fully supported by the Ministry of the Interior, the Ghana Police Service and other allied security agencies, stressing that no one who voluntarily surrenders a firearm will be arrested or prosecuted even if the weapon was stolen from the police.

He appealed to the media to support the campaign, noting that Ghana’s peace could be threatened if illegal firearms remain in the hands of civilians.

He warned that failure to address the proliferation of small arms could lead to instability similar to what is being experienced in parts of the sub-region.

“Ghana cannot be peaceful if guns remain in the hands of civilians. If we fail to address this, what is happening in other countries can also happen here,” he warned.

Meanwhile, NACSA has disclosed that the Greater Accra Region currently leads in the number of firearms surrendered under the Gun Amnesty Programme.
