Designer jailed for possessing firearm

Accra, Aug. 17, GNA - A Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced Nicolas Aklede, 36, to three years imprisonment for possessing firearms without authority.

Aklede, a designer, was nabbed when he attempted to sell one locally manufactured pistol to two persons at Flamingo in Accra in October 2009.

He pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting, Mr. Awere Opanyinyena, State Attorney, told the court that the witnesses were a driver and trader residing at Mataheko and Laterbioshie respectively.

He said the convict lived at Abotasi in the Volta Region.

On October 13, 2009, at about 2:00 pm the witnesses had a tip off that Aklede was offering for sale a locally manufactured gun at Mamprobi in Accra for GHc100.

The prosecution said the witnesses feigned interest and therefore lured Aklede to a drinking spot, apprehended him and handed him over to the Greater Accra Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further investigations.
