Court jails woman for assault

Kade, July 6, GNA - A 38-year-old trader, Rita Bawa has been jailed three months in hard labour by the Kade District Court for assault. Rita who pleaded not guilty for assaulting Adwoa Faustina was also ordered to pay her a compensation of GHc 500. Prosecuting, Police Inspector Francis Cobbina told the court presided over by Mr E.A Awuah that about two months ago, the complainant, credited GHc 1 worth of fish from the convict.

He said when Faustina failed to pay after a number of demands, the complainant's grandmother paid the amount and that created enmity between Rita and Faustina.

At about 0800 hours on June 28 a pipe-borne water attendant contracted the complainant to do her business for her. The prosecutor said a small boy who went to fetch water but had no money was refused the service by Faustina. Rita confronted the complainant and told her that she had no right to refuse to serve the boy.

The complainant then replied Rita that she had the right since she was in charge of the sale of the water.

Rita became offended and assaulted the complainant with a stick and a kitchen stool and also slapped the face of Faustina's one year-old baby. Faustina who sustained injuries rushed to the police station to lodge a complainant and was issued with police medical form to attend hospital. Rita admitted to the police during interrogation that she harmed the complainant during a fight. 6 July 10
