Sunyani, Nov. 14, GNA - Five supporters of Ashanti Gold Football (Ashgold) club were on Monday arraigned before a Sunyani Magistrate court for causing damage to plastic chairs belonging to the National Sports Council in Sunyani.
Thomas Arhinful, Kwame Yeboah, Frank Amankwaah, Yaw Asamoah Tweneboah and Newton Abekah pleaded not guilty to the charges of causing unlawful damage, assault and causing harm and were granted 20 million cedis bail each to reappear on November 27.
A sixth suspect, Kwadwo Tweneboah, could not be in court as he is on admission at the regional hospital with injuries. Prosecuting, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Martin Dafeamekpor told the court presided by Mr. Albert Zoogah that on November 12 there was a football match between King Faisal and Ashgold at the Sunyani Coronation Park.
He said supporters of Ashgold became aggrieved with the result after losing 1-2 to King Faisal and started destroying the plastic chairs at the park and attacked and seriously wounded two policemen who went in to stop the carnage.
A police reinforcement restored peace and order and six of the supporters were arrested and charged with the offence. The injured policemen, Constable Felix Danquah and Corporal Adu, were treated and discharged at the regional hospital.
