The Ghana Police Service has arrested a suspect in connection with the robbery and murder of a police officer at Zebilla in the Upper East Region on February 8, 2026.
During initial interrogation, the suspect, identified as Simon Apusiga, denied shooting the officer. He claimed that another individual, identified only as Apebaa, also known as “True Boy,” had informed him that a police officer had been shot.
The suspect has since been transferred to the CID Headquarters in Accra, where he remains in custody and is assisting with further investigations.
Police say efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals who may have been involved in the crime.
The arrest followed a directive issued by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohonu, on February 10, 2026, instructing the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters to track down a suspect believed to be hiding in the Tarkwa Huni Valley area.
A team of investigators led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) James Atampugri was immediately deployed to Tarkwa Huni Valley and its environs after intelligence suggested that the suspect was in the area.
Upon arrival, officers mounted surveillance and carried out sustained intelligence-gathering operations over a three-day period.
The suspect was eventually traced to Fante Mines Housing, a suburb of Tarkwa Aboso. In a joint operation with the Western Central Regional Operations Second-in-Command, ASP Raymond Sallas Awuloge, officers swooped on the residence and arrested Apusiga, also known as Ananga, aged 42.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect left Zebilla on February 10, 2026, two days after the robbery and fatal shooting of the police officer.
Police sources say call data records place the suspect at the crime scene between 8:05 p.m. and 8:50 p.m., a time frame consistent with when the incident occurred.
