Welder remanded for possessing firearms

Nii Armah, a welder, has been remanded into prison custody for possessing firearms without lawful authority, by an Accra Circuit court.

Nii, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was remanded by the court to reappear on February 19, 2014.

Prosecuting Chief Inspector E. Afful told the court that the complainant is the Gyasehene of Teshie and a member of the Aya Kwablah Family while the accused person is a resident of Kwabenya.

He said on February 1, 2014, at about 0930 hours the complainant together with other family members visited the family’s parcel of land at Kwabenya, where encroachers had been developing.

He said the complainant and the witnesses met a young man developing part of the land for an illegitimate owner, so the complainant asked the workers to stop working.

The prosecution said the accused and three others believed to be land guards rushed to the site.

He told the court that Nii who was armed with a gun hid himself in a nearby bush and started firing indiscriminately into the air.

Chief Inspector Afful said the police was immediately informed who then rushed to the scene, when the accused saw the Police he took to his heels.

He said on February 8, police investigation led to his arrest from his hideout at Kwabenya.
