The Amasaman Circuit Court has sentenced two washing bay attendants to eight years’ imprisonment each for stealing a Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle valued at GH¢250,000.00.
Kwabena Tawiah and Bismark Asiedu, both 22 years old, pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to steal and causing damage to the vehicle, which belonged to Madam Agnes Azametsi, a businesswoman residing in Satellite, Accra.
Presiding Judge Enid Marful-Sau took into account the accused persons’ admission of guilt and their cooperation with authorities in delivering the sentence, noting that their plea had saved the court’s time.
According to Police Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah, the incident occurred on April 24, 2025, when Madam Azametsi took her Hyundai Santa Fe to a local washing bay where the two convicts worked.
After handing the vehicle over to Tawiah and informing him of a brief trip to Accra, she returned later that day to find both attendants and the car missing.
A report was filed at the Adjen Kotoku Police Station. Subsequent investigations and intelligence led to the arrest of Tawiah and Asiedu on April 30, 2025, at their hideout in Nkawkaw around 9:00 p.m.
According to a report by Graphic Online dated June 10, 2025, the suspects later directed police to the residence of one Dennis Debrah, alias ‘Capone,’ at Pemenasi, where the stolen vehicle was recovered.
Debrah was also arrested but was subsequently discharged by the court after being found not guilty of dishonestly receiving the vehicle.
Police investigations revealed that the accused had planned to sell the car in Kumasi. During their journey, they sold the vehicle’s jack, wheel spanner, and one rim for GH¢100 to purchase fuel.
They also caused damage to several parts of the vehicle, including the bumper, fender moulding, fog light, and petrol tank cover, which they admitted resulted from reckless driving.
Upon arriving in Pemenasi, the two requested GH¢2,000 from Debrah, who demanded the vehicle as collateral before providing the funds.
Following their confession and the recovery of the vehicle, Tawiah and Asiedu were charged and convicted, while Debrah was cleared of all charges.
