Two remanded over alleged GH¢932,040 fuel theft, arson

Two men have been remanded by the Accra Circuit Courts on the count of stealing 54,000 litres of petrol worth GH¢980,000, as well as setting the fuel tanker on fire.

According to a myjoyonline.com report on August 20, 2026, the accused persons, Alhassan Amidu, a driver and Francis Owusu, a driver’s mate, allegedly planned to sell off the fuel and set the tanker on fire afterwards and make the incident look like an accident.

Both men are facing charges of conspiracy to commit crime, specifically stealing and causing damage.

They are also facing separate charges of stealing and causing damage.

Meanwhile, both accused persons denied all allegations.

The report further indicated that, Emmanuel Narh, the complainant, is the owner of JK Narh Transport, a company involved in the transportation of petroleum products.

The prosecution said that, Amidu was the one driving the tanker with registration number JK9171-21, while Owusu accompanied him as a driver’s mate.

The court was informed that the two individuals had been asked to transport 54,000 litres of fuel from Tema to Buipe in the Savannah Region.

According to the prosecution, during the journey, the accused persons allegedly diverted the fuel for sale and set the tanker on fire on the section of the road between Kawakpe and Gurupe.

They later allegedly told the complainant that the tanked has been destroyed in an accident.

The narration by the accused persons raised suspicions, prompting the complainant to report the issue to the police.

The two suspects were arrested following the report by the complainant.

The prosecution also told the court that, during investigations , the accused persons allegedly admitted in their caution statement that they drilled into the compartment seal of the tanker to gain access to the fuel.

Investigation into the matter is ongoing while the accused persons are expected to appear in court on August 31, 2026.
