Two car snatchers grabbed by Suame police

Kumasi, Feb. 25, GNA - Two suspects are being held by the Ashanti West Divisional Police, Suame, in Kumasi for allegedly snatching a taxi cab. Joshua Kwadwo Asare, 19, a final year student of New Century Technical School at Dansoman in Accra and Yaw Amoabeng, 24, who doubles as carpenter and a driver, all natives of Twifo-Praso in the Central Region, were arrested on Wednesday, at the point of selling the taxi cab.

Their accomplices, now at large are being looked for by the Divisional Command. Chief Inspector Kwegyir Aggrey, the Commander, who briefed the press, said at about 0700 hours on February 25, 2009, one Kwadwo Boadu, a spare parts dealer at the Suame Magazine in Kumasi, who suspected the young men were about to sell a stolen car, made a report to the police. He said the police rushed to the place where they arrested the two in possession of the Opel Astra Carravan with registration number AS 1826 Y.

In their caution statement, Asare told the police that he visited a friend called Apaapalo at Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region and spent three weeks with him. Chief Superintendent Aggrey said on February 24, 2009, Apaapalo introduced three of his friends to Asare and told him that they had seen a taxi, which they intend snatching. Asare according to Inspector Aggrey recounted that all of them walked from Kukurantumi to another place called IPS where they saw the vehicle.

The group stopped the driver, boarded it and on their way to Kumasi, beat him until he became unconscious and then dragged him into the bush. They took the cab away, driven by Amoabeng, to Suame Magazine where they were about to sell it. According to them, they intended selling the car for GH¢4,000.
