Three arrested for possessing sacks of Indian hemp

The Police in the Northern region have arrested three out of five suspects in possession of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The suspects were arrested by a police patrol team at the Savelugu AOR Thursday morning at about 11am upon a tip off.

The suspects are Fatawu Tiniya, 29, Masahudu Iddrisu, 20, and Zaka Mahama, 23 years.

Two of the suspects, police say have absconded. However, all the five motor bikes belonging to the suspects have been intercepted and are in the police custody.

Briefing the press in Tamale on the arrest, Northern regional Police crime officer, Superintendent of Police, Kwabena Otuo Acheampong sai, at a spot test of the substance proved positive.

“Yesterday on the 11th of this month, our officers were on patrol at savelugu OAR and they had a tip off that some five young men were on motorbikes carrying substances suspected to be Indian hemp, so they laid ambush and then after some minutes, the suspects approached the police where they have laid ambush and they intercepted and arrested three of them, two of the suspects managed to escape arrest,” Superintendent Otuo Acheampong said.

The suspects are believed to have carried the substance from the North East region and heading to Tamale.

“They alleged that, they were coming from a community within North East region to the Northern region, Tamale when they were intercepted on the way which we also verified.”

The three suspects are therefore to appear before the Tamale High Court on Friday on charges of possessing narcotic substances without authority.
