Thirteen arrested for defecating at Aflao beach

Aflao (V/R), Nov. 13, GNA - An operation code-named "leave the environment clean" mounted at the weekend by a team of security and environmental personnel to halt the wanton disregard to environmental hygiene at Aflao has led to the arrest of 13 people for defecating at the beach.
A number of others managed to flee by jumping into the sea leaving the team helpless.
A source close to the team who spoke to the Ghana News Agency said the exercise, which would include arraigning offenders before court, would continue until a change is seen.
Attributing the annual cholera and other disease outbreaks in the community to the low interest in environmental cleanliness, the source stated that it would be an act of irresponsibility on their part to ignore the situation.
It called for the maintenance of clean environment, particularly at the border area, which is the first point of contact with foreigners as the country strives to attract more tourists. The task force, formed by concerned young men to enforce cleanliness at the Aflao beach, was disbanded about three years ago after continuous clashes with some members of the community.
