Teacher in court for negligently causing harm

Richard Kwadzo Ewusie, a teacher, has appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for negligently causing harm to a pupil’s right eye while flogging another in their school at Abeka.

The edge of the cane reportedly hit the victim’s right eye, which has now been declared “totally damaged.”

Ewusie, who has legal representation, has denied the charge.

He has been admitted to bail in the sum of GH?100,000.00 cedis with one surety by the Court, presided over by Mrs Abena Oppong Adjin-Doku.

Ewusie is to reappear on April 20.

Initially, Ewusie was charged with causing harm but the Police dropped that charge and charged him with negligently causing harm.

The victim, Edward Pobi Abrokwah, is a Junior High School pupil in Form Two.

Prosecuting, Detective Inspector Judith B. Asante said the complainant, King Isaac Abrokwah, was a farmer who lived at Agogo in the Ashanti Region.

According to the prosecutor, the 14 year old victim was a pupil of Jacobs Preparatory School at Abeka.

The accused, a teacher in the same school, also lived at Abeka.

On June 23, 2014, at about 09:00 hours the accused person who was teaching the victim’s class asked the pupils some questions but they were unable to answer correctly.

In the process of flogging one of the pupils sitting next to the victim, the extreme end of the cane hit the right eye causing severe pains.

The victim reported the incident to the head teacher of the School who gave the victim a painkiller.

The victim later reported the incident to his parents and he was sent to the Sight for Africa Clinic for treatment.

The Prosecution said the victim was later referred to the Agogo Hospital for further treatment but after examination, the medical doctor declared the victim’s eye as “totally damaged.”

The matter was thus reported to the Police and Ewusie was arrested.
