A suspected gunman has been arrested, and a cache of weapons and ammunition seized, following a cordon and search operation conducted by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.

The operation, carried out in the early hours of Monday, April 21, 2025, was part of intensified security measures aimed at restoring calm in Bawku and its environs, which have been experiencing clashes and intermittent gunfire.

According to a statement from the GAF, signed by Brigadier General Eric Aggrey-Quarshie, Director General of Public Relations, troops deployed in Binduri heard sporadic gunshots from the Binduri Central Market area. Personnel swiftly responded and cordoned off the area.

The statement said a combined team from the 11 Mechanised Battalion and the Joint Task Force, supported by the Police, conducted a thorough search.

During the operation, one suspected gunman was apprehended and subsequently handed over to the Police.

The security team also retrieved significant military-grade items, including one empty M16 rifle magazine, an AK-47 rifle, a G3 rifle, 370 rounds of M16 and AK-47 ammunition, 128 rounds of G3 ammunition, a machete, four fragmentation jackets, a pair of boots, and one helmet.

"Later in the day, some unknown gunmen attempted to infiltrate Binduri, but military personnel on patrols prevented the infiltration.

"This led to an exchange of fire between the military and the unknown gunmen, who eventually fled the scene,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the GAF confirmed that the situation was currently under control, and troops remained on high alert to respond to any emerging threats.

"The GAF, working closely with other security agencies, remains committed to safeguarding the peace and security of Bawku and urges residents and the general public to support ongoing efforts to restore normalcy,” it said.
