Suicide at Spintex Road

Residents of Baatsona on the Spintex Road in Accra woke up to a bizarre incident on Friday morning when a man believed to be in his thirties committed suicide by hanging.

Some residents found the lifeless body of the man whose name was only given as Taninu Baako, hanging on a ceiling fan in the partially completed house he occupied.

Persons who knew the deceased described him as a trader who plied his trade around the Ashaiman market.

A visit to the scene by Daily Guide where the body was found hanging on a nylon rope tied to a ceiling fan in his bedroom revealed that the deceased might have stood on a plastic chair close to his feet and committed the act.

Those gathered expressed utter shock and wondered what might have influenced him to take his own life. Other persons, who could not come to terms with his sudden death, were heard murmuring, suspecting foul play. The door was locked from inside the room, feeding into the belief that he might have killed himself.

The deceased was wearing only a brown striped boxer shorts at the time he died.

Superintendent Alex C. Wowolo, the Sakumono District Police Commander, who confirmed the incident to Daily Guide when contacted, explained that they received information about the incident and without wasting time, his outfit dispatched policemen to the scene.

According to him, preliminary investigations at the scene did not reveal the cause of death, but according to friends and some relations, the deceased exhibited no signs of stress before that fateful Friday morning.

He said at about 10:00am that morning, the deceased was not seen by neighbours and after several calls to his cell phone which rang in the room without a response, they broke into the room and found him hanging.

The District Police Commander said the body was conveyed and deposited at Police Hospital morgue in Accra for autopsy, noting that “so far it looks like suicide, but we will still investigate to find out the true cause of his death.”
