Student jailed seven years for defilement

A Tarkwa circuit court has sentenced Daniel Manyeh, an 18-year-old student of Kapsa Senior High in the Volta Region for defiling a 15-year-old girl at Kutukrom near Prestea.

He was convicted on his own plea. Prosecuting, Detective Chief Inspector Oscar Amponsah told the court presided over by Mr. Samuel Obeng Diawuo that the complainant, Akwasi Bentum is the Unit Committee Chairman of Sikaneasem who lives at Kutukrom whiles the convict is a native of Kapsa in the Volta Region.

He said on February 10, this year, the offender left his home town to Accra and later traveled to Kutukrom.

According to Detective Amponsah, while in Accra the convict met the victim who lives with her grandmother at Konkomba market in Accra selling pure water.

The Prosecutor said Manyeh engaged the victim in a conversation and realized that he and the victim hailed from the same locality.

The victim complained to the offender about the hardship and maltreatment she had been going through staying with her grandmother and even expressed her willingness to return to her village at Sibey.

Detective Amponsah said the convict took advantage of the complaint and told the victim that he was on his way to Kapsa and the victim pleaded with him to send her to Sibey at his expense and she promised to work and refund the cost of transportation to him.

He said the convict agreed and on February 12, the victim went for her clothes from her place of abode and left without the knowledge of her grandmother.

Detective Amponsah said they traveled in the night, but instead of sending the victim to her home town, the convict took her to Prestea and he started having sexual intercourse with her.

He said the victim became stranded and had no alternative than to follow the convict wherever he went, but on February 23 one Stephen Nyame of Kutukrom over heard the victim speaking Basare language which sounded strange to him.

The Prosecutor said when he tried to find out how the victim got to the town she narrated her ordeal to him in tears.

On hearing this information, the complainant who was the landlord of Manyeh was informed and he (Manyeh) was arrested and handed over to the Police.
