Spiritualist in court over fake currency

Accra, Aug. 10, GNA - A spiritualist on Wednesday appeared before an Accra Circuit Court for possessing fake US dollar notes totalling “9,500 dollars”.

Yusuf Ali charged with possession of forged currency notes pleaded not guilty.

The court presided over by Ms Adwoa Coleman admitted Ali to bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 with two sureties to be justified.

He is to reappear on September 7.

The prosecutor, Superintendent of Police Adzie Boye, told the court that in July this year, the Police had information that a “Mallam” or spiritualist at Hydrafoam Estate in Nungua was circulating forged dollars in the major cities in the country.

Based on the information, Superintendent Boye said, a team of personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department on August 4 trailed the accused and arrested him.

According to the prosecutor, information gathered further indicated that Ali was about to give a large sum of the fake dollar notes to one of his victims in exchange of genuine cedi notes when he was arrested.

Superintendent Boye said while the Police was escorting Ali to his place of abode at the Nautical College in Nungua, a black container fell from a hidden compartment under the steering wheel of his car with registration number GT 5395 Z.

According to the prosecutor, the said container contained 9,500 dollars which were found to be fake.

Ali then pleaded with the police officers to resolve the matter.
