Small scale miner convicted for stealing

Michael Anim, a 19 year-old small scale miner, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment by a Tarkwa Circuit Court, for stealing a car battery and causing damage to the window of a taxi cab.

He pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Florence Tawiah, told the court, presided by Mr. Justice Obeng Asante, that the complainant, Amos Amponsah, was a driver and lived in the same neighbourhood at Wassa Akropong with Anim.

She said on September 26, the complainant parked his KIA Rio taxi cab with registration number AW2382-14, in front of his house after the day's work.

Chief Inspector Tawiah said when Amos woke up the next day, around 0600 hours, he realized that the back door window of the taxi cab was broken and the battery stolen. Both items were valued GH¢600.

He, therefore, informed people about the incident.

Chief Inspector Tawiah said some days later, Anim offered the stolen battery for sale at GH¢ 200 to a witness in the case.

She said upon seeing the battery, the witness quickly informed the complainant on phone and he went and identified it to be his.

Chief Inspector Tawiah said Anim was arrested and was handed over to the police with the battery.

She said when the police searched the convict’s room in his presence, the officers found a pinged bar, hammer and metal cutter, which were suspected to have been used in committing the crime.
