Self-styled Contractor Remanded over GH¢52,000 Fraud

Kumasi, April 7, GNA - A self-styled contractor was on Tuesday remanded into prison custody by a Kumasi Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding a trader of GH¢52,000 under the pretext of securing her with five shop rooms. George Adu pleaded not guilty to the charge and he will re-appear before the court on April 22, 2009. Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP), Regina Addo-Yobo told the Court presided over by Mr D.W.P. Amedior that in 2007 the complainant, Madam Mary Darfour, went to Ash-Town in Kumasi where she saw the rooms under construction.

She developed interest and contacted the accused, who convinced her that he had entered a 30-year agreement with the owner to man rooms. He therefore asked for GH¢52,000 from the complainant as a rent advance for five of the shops which were expected to be completed within six months. DSP Addo-Yobo stated that, the complainant realizing Adu could not fulfil his part of the contract at the end of the stipulated time, made a complaint to the police after several attempts to get her money back failed. During investigations, he was found out to be an errand boy of one Osei Kwabena, the contractor for the project. 7 April 09
