Robbers shoot and injure two in goldmine raid

Gun-wielding robbers shot and wounded two men during a raid on a Chinese-operated small-scale gold mining site at Atuntuma in the Atwima-Mponua District.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Thomas Freeman Asante, the District Crime Officer, confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), and named the injured as Wai, a Chinese national, and Kofi Gyambibi, a Ghanaian employee of the mine.

He said the gun wounds they suffered were not life threatening, adding that, they had been sent to the Saint Martin’s Hospital at Agroyesum for treatment.

The robbers struck at about 1800 hours on Monday and seized a quantity of the precious mineral that had been dug out by the miners.

ASP Asante said they managed to escape before the police arrived at the place.

A motor-bike suspected to have been used for the robbery attack but later abandoned, has been recovered as efforts to track down and arrest them intensified.

The crime officer said the miners had just closed from the day’s business, when the robbers burst onto the scene and amid sporadic gunshots, grabbed the gold, shot at the pair and fled.

He said everything possible would be done to arrest and bring them to justice.

ASP Asante urged people in the area to be more security alert, and assist the police with useful leads to fight crime.
