Police in the Northern Region have rescued a kidnap victim at Wapuli in the Saboba District after a swift intelligence-led operation.
Three suspects who allegedly kidnapped the victim on December 2 and demanded a GH¢100,000 ransom from the victim’s family were later arrested by the police after a ‘serious exchange of fire.’
A police situational report said on December 5, the Northern Regional Commander, DCOP Wisdom Lavoe, tasked a team of five intel officers from Tamale Regional Police Intelligence Department to proceed to Wapuli in the Saboba District to lay surveillance, rescue the victim, and apprehend the suspects.
“The suspects were trailed, and upon catching up with them, the Intel team engaged in a serious exchange of fire with the suspects, who were believed to be numbering about four between the hours of 00230 on the 06/12/25.
"During the exchange of fire, the suspects fled the scene, abandoning one motorbike with registration plate M-25-NR and a Samsung phone,” a police report sighted by GhanaWeb said.
The police intel team later the same day tracked down the suspects at Bakpaba in the Nanumba North Municipality and apprehended three suspects, namely Haruna Seidu, 31; Amidu Bande, 30; and Osman Bande, 40.
Two additional motorbikes with one registered number M-25-GB 1026, the last motorbike unregistered, and an amount of money in a bag totaling GH¢70,000 believed to be part of the ransom paid before the victim’s released were also retrieved.
Meanwhile, police say one suspect remains on the run and is believed to have sustained gunshot wounds during the earlier exchange of fire.
“He is considered armed and dangerous, and the Intel team is actively pursuing him to effect his arrest,” the report warned.
