Police corporal to stand trial for murder

Sunyani, June 14, GNA - A magistrate's court in Sunyani on Tuesday committed police detective lance corporal Ben Azagisnaba, who allegedly shot and killed Mr. Tereku, a mechanical engineer in Sunyani on April 25, last year to stand trial at the high court for murder.

Mr Albert Zoogah, presiding judge, after listening to the plea of the accused's counsel, Mr. Asomah Cheremeh, ordered the accused to remain on the bail granted him and to appear before the high court on June 20, this year to answer the charge of murder.

A police source said Tereku was shot based on information received by the regional police command from an informant that the deceased was an armed robber who had planned to strike in the Sunyani municipality. The informant had reported to the police at about 1600 hours on the day of the incident that two suspected armed robbers who had gone to a restaurant to eat were heard planning to strike that night.

The police source said the informant trailed the alleged armed robber to where he was lodging at the Catering Rest House and gave the registration number of the vehicle that they were using to the police. The deceased was shot by corporal Azagisnaba, who was among a police team that was detailed to effect Tereku's arrest.

The police source explained that when the team got to the lodging place and were positioning themselves, the informant and one of the officers went directly into the deceased's room.

The police stated that before the officer could give the order for the arrest, they heard a gun shot and quickly rushed to the scene only to be told by corporal Azagisnaba that the suspect robber struggled with him and his gun went off.
