Police in Accra have arrested fifteen persons accused of imposing what the Police call an unlawful curfew on Ga Mashie and its environs.

On Monday traditional authorities announced the performance of some traditional rites as part of activities to mark this year’s Homowo Festival.

A section of social media users issued warnings to their friends in the Greater Accra region to remain indoors by 7 pm Monday over a traditional rite to be observed in the Ga Mashie enclave.

Some traders had to close their shops early with others rushing home while making calls to family and friends to seek refuge in case they are unable to beat the 7 pm deadline.

The police later on, in the evening of Monday, June 25, 2018, urged residents of Accra to go about their duties that evening, without fear, dispelling rumors of curfew from the Ga Traditional Council.

The Director of Operations for the Accra Regional Police Command Chief Superintendent Kwesi Ofori said no traditional council had the power to impose curfew hence the rumors should be disregarded.

According to him, the traditional leaders within the Ga Mashie jurisdiction denied knowledge of any curfew.
