Police Not Concerned With Rising Crime Rate

INSPITE of the hue and cry of the public over the surging rate of crime in the society, the Ghana Police Administration has brush aside such reports noting that there was no cause for alarm.

The administration in a press statement signed by its Acting Director for Public Affairs, DSP Kwesi Ofori, assured the public that the police is working feverishly to provide security and protect lives and properties as well as ensure incident-free Christmas festivities and beyond.

According to the Police Administration, statistics available to them does not place the society in such hopeless situation in terms of crime presence as is being perceived by a section of the public.

The police noted that from November 1, 2006 to December 17, a total number of 30 robberies were committed countrywide.

Additionally, it noted that the administration recorded 10 robbery cases countrywide in this month as compared to 20 cases in November. This statistical data according the police proves that the crime situation is improving drastically.

The police administration indicated that such robberies include "street robberies, where items ranging from mobile phones, wristwatches to small amount of monies were involved, and most of the perpetrators were arrested."

The police said it does not consider the current crime rate as insignificant as the administration is continuously working to ensure that the crime rate is always at its barest minimum.

It further stressed that as a result of the intensive patrol of the police within the communities, highways, robberies have been reduced adding " we have further intensifies the police/Military operations to ensure that the people celebrate the Christmas, New Year and the 50th Anniversary celebrations in peace."

The police administration has also noted that its traffic management programmes and campaign embarked upon in additions to serious road campaign initiated by other stakeholders, motor accident had been minimized.

It has therefore called on the general public to maintain personal security and volunteer information to the police on suspected criminals living in their midst in order to fight crime within the society.
