Obuasi police make a big haul of illegal weapons

The police in Obuasi have seized a large cache of illegal weapons and dried leaves suspected to be cannabis from a house at Nyiaeso, a suburb of the gold mining town.

The haul included 19 locally- manufactured pistols, one pump action gun and 10 double and single-barreled guns.

Added to these were a quantity of used and live cartridges together with assorted tools that could be used for the manufacture of weapons.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kofi Dwumfuor Berchie, the Obuasi Divisional Commander, told the press in Kumasi that two suspects – Kwame Nyame, 29, and Kwesi Owusu, 60, are being held.

The interception of the weapons was based on a lead provided by travelers on a Metro Mass Transit Bus.

The Divisional Commander said a police patrol team that had mounted a snap checkpoint on the Obuasi-Dunkwa road was tipped off that Nyame had been seen exchanging something they believed was a weapon with another person not far from where the police officers were.

They said they saw the suspect collect a black polythene bag in return. ACP Berchie said the police officers quickly responded and as they approached, Nyame took to heels but he was chased and arrested.

He then led them to the room of Owusu where the weapons, ammunition, tools and the dried leaves were uncovered.

The Divisional Commander expressed satisfaction with the level of public cooperation and urged the people to continue to provide them with useful information.
