Nsawam: Man butchers wife, 27

A 45-year-old man, Kweku Agyei, on Tuesday March 1, butchered his wife, Adwoa Otcherewaa, 27, to death, at Oboadaka, a community near Nsawam.

Kwaku Agyei, who was allegedly drunk, was said to have ambushed his wife, who was on her way to collect monies from debtors. He allegedly attacked his spouse and inflicted multiple machete wounds on her – killing her instantly.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary in Accra as investigations continue.

Neighbours, who spoke with Class News’ Eastern regional correspondent McAnthony Dagyenga said there were several domestic spats between the couple, which always blew over after a few days. They say they did, therefore, not anticipate a gruesome end to their last quarrel.

A brother of the deceased, Kofi Sammy, narrated to Class News that often the couple quarrelled, broke up, but almost always made up later. "They have children, so, we never encouraged them to divorce or break up,” Kofi Sammy said.

According to him, “because Agyei smokes Indian hemp and drinks alcohol, Otcherewaa made up her mind to divorce him, and a heartbroken Agyei planned to kill her”.

"On February 29, 2016, Agyei came from town drunk and upended the dinner being prepared [by his wife], compelling the family to go to bed on empty stomach.

"At dawn on Monday March 1, he took away six pieces of cloth and GHS150 from his wife and left home.

“On the same day, when Otcherewaa was en route to meet her clients to collect some debts owed her, Agyei ambushed and killed her," he said.

Meanwhile, the Nsawam Municipal Police Commander, DSP Michael Dandy Zah, has confirmed the incident to Class News.

“For now the police is conveying the body to the Police Hospital. Beyond that I think it’s too early for police to say what we intend doing, but the case will be given the needed investigation,” he said

The suspect, Kwaku Agyei, is currently on the run.
