Nkawkaw: Girlfriend ‘killer’ lynched

A man allegedly accused of slitting his girlfriend’s throat has been lynched at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.

Kofi Asirifi, 35, an ex-convict, was seized by a mob after stabbing and slashing Mabel Pomaa, 35, on Wednesday February 24, 2016.

According to Nkawkaw District Police Commander Chief Superintendent James Sarfo Peprah, police received a tip-off on the mob action at about 10am Wednesday. Officers then rushed to the scene to find Asirifi unconscious and soaked in blood. He was rescued and taken to the Holy Family Hospital at Nkawkaw where he died moments after arrival.

The commander said Asirifi, a father of eleven, met and began a relationship in 2011 with Pomaa, after serving a six-year jail term. The couple, according to the police, lived together until a few weeks ago when Pomaa broke up with Asirifi and moved out.

Supt. Sarfo Peprah said despite Asirifi’s pleas for Pomaa’s return, she stood her grounds until that fateful day when he stalked her to an isolated location and repeated his request, but to no avail – a situation that threw Asirifi into a fit of rage – resulting in the homicide.

An alarm was raised by some locals as Asirifi attempted fleeing the crime scene. A mob accosted and beat him to near-death, until the police popped up to his rescue.

Pomaa was rushed to the hospital but died during surgery. The bodies of the two have been kept at the Nkawkaw Government Hospital mortuary, awaiting autopsy, while police continue with their investigations.
