C.K. Akunnor Made Assistant Captain

Former Black Stars captain, Charles K. Akunnor has been made the first assistant captain of German club, VFL Wolfsburg as the club selected its representatives for the upcoming season.

The captain went to midfielder Miroslav Karhan who was picked ahead of the former Ghanaian captain. Akunnor together with two selected representatives belong to the player advisory setup. The player advisory is a body, which represents the players and puts forward their concerns.

Akunnor, took over the Black Stars captainship after Ghana’s legend, Abedi Ayew Pele stepped down after the country’s poor showing during the 1998 African Cup of Nations in Burkina Faso.

Abedi stepped down even before Ghana played her last game against DR Congo, which the Black Stars lost by a lone goal. The lot then fell on Charles K. Akunnor who held the mantle from that time till Ghana’s World Cup 2002 qualification dream ended.

Coach Fred Osam Duodo left him out of the Black Stars team that participated in the Mali CAN 2002. Akunnor is yet to be invited again into the Black Stars by new coach, Millan Zivadinovic who is expected to arrive in Accra on Sunday after a two-week monitoring programme of Turkey and Greece-based Ghanaian players.
