The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has destroyed more than GH¢12 million worth of illicit drugs at Bundase, warning drug peddlers of intensified crackdowns.
The haul, one of the largest recorded in such a short period was seized within just two months. It included 6,513 kg of cannabis valued at GH¢651,300, 1.5 kg of cocaine worth $13,500, and nearly six million capsules of tramadol, ecstasy, and other substances valued at GH¢11.8 million.
In an adomonline.com report on August 23,2025, Brigadier-General Maxwell Obuba Mantey, Director-General of NACOC, disclosed that tramadol made up almost half of the destroyed substances, including a huge consignment intercepted in a 40-foot container at Tema Port.
The drugs, verified on-site by the Ghana Standards Authority, were destroyed under court order.
Responding to concerns about redirecting seized substances for pharmaceutical use, Brigadier-General Mantey explained that NACOC’s mandate is limited to enforcement, not repurposing.

“We are implementers of policy, and so we don’t dictate how seized products should be used. Until the law changes, we will continue to destroy them,” he said.
NACOC has urged traditional and religious leaders, as well as other state agencies, to intensify support in the fight against drug trafficking, stressing the impact of narcotics on young people in schools and universities.
“Our antennas are very high, and we are closing in on most of them. When we get them, they will regret it,” Brigadier-General Mantey warned.
The Commission says it intends to sustain the momentum, with more operations and destruction exercises expected in the coming months.
