Man jailed three years for smoking Indian hemp

Tema, April 1, GNA - The Tema Circuit Court on Thursday, sentenced a 38-year old labourer, Sulley Bawa, to three years imprisonment for smokin= g Indian hemp. The convict, who pleaded not guilty to two counts of possessing and=

smoking Indian hemp, was found guilty. Mrs Laurenda Owusu, the Presiding Judge, said the prosecution prove= d its case beyond all reasonable doubts that the convict actually committed=

the crime.

Police Chief Inspector Adolphus Otchere had earlier told the court that, on May 25 2009, a team of policemen mounted an operation in the Tem= a Metropolis to bring down criminal activities. He said around the GHACEM area, the convict was seen smoking a wrap= per of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. The prosecution said, the convict was arrested and handed over to t= he Railway and Ports branch of the Criminal Investigative Department of the Police for investigation. Chief Inspector Otchere said, the convict admitted the offence in h= is caution statement.
