Man jailed 12 years for defilement

A 35-year old unemployed man was on Thursday sentenced to 12 years imprisonment by an Accra Circuit Court for defiling a 13 year old girl in an uncompleted building at Oduman, near Amasaman.

Kwabena Opoku, who is on the verge of getting married to a lady, pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement.

The court presided over by Mrs Rita Agyemang Budu convicted Opoku on his plea.

Prosecuting, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sarah Acquah said the victim's mother was the complainant, and lives with the victim at Oduman, a suburb of Accra.

According to DSP Acquah, Opoku also resides in the same vicinity, and that, during the month of June this year, at about at 19:00 hours, the complainant sent the victim to buy mosquito coil nearby.

Opoku saw the victim on her way back and lured her into an uncompleted room and had sexual intercourse with her and warned victim not to tell anyone.

On June 13, this year, prosecution said the victim began vomiting and when her mother quizzed her she informed her that it was Opoku, who had had sex with her.

Prosecution said the victim’s mother reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victims’ Support Unit (DOVVSU), Tesano where the victim was issued with a medical report for examination and treatment.

Later the prosecutor said Opoku was arrested and in his caution statement admitted the offence.
