Man attacks retired police officer

The Kade District Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday ordered that Daniel Akaligah, an electrician, standing trial for causing harm, be sent to a psychiatrist hospital to determine his mental state of mind.

Akaligah, 23, faced a charge of inflicting cutlass wounds on George Adu-Gyamfi, a retired police officer.

Police Sergeant Ambrose Akpablie told the court that around 1730 hours on January 27, while Adu-Gyamfi was resting at his residence at Asuom, Akaligah armed with a cutlass entered the premises, attacked and inflicted cutlass wounds on him.

He said Adu-Gyamfi raised the alarm and some people from a nearby prayer camp rushed to the scene, rescued him and arrested Akaligah and sent him to the Asuom police station.

He said though Adu-Gyamfi was bleeding profusely from wounds on his left hand, he managed to drive his car to the Asuom Health Centre for treatment.

He was later referred to the St Dominic Hospital at Akwatia which in turn referred him to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for further treatment on January 29.

When the court asked Akaligah why he did that, he said he was sorry, but his behaviour in the dock made the magistrate to order him to be taken to hospital for mental examination and adjourned the case to February 28.

The court however ordered Akaligah parents who were in court to bear the medical cost incurred by Adu-Gyamfi.
