Man, 36 remanded for allegedly defiling five-year-old girl

Kumasi, Jan 18, GNA- A 36-year-old tailor, Anthony Opoku, was on Wednesday remanded in prison custody by a Kumasi circuit court for allegedly defiling a five-year-old kindergarten pupil. He pleaded guilty to the charge and sentence was deferred to January 23 following the presiding judge's request for further investigation.

Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the court presided over by Madam Wilhemina Hammond, that Opoku is a resident at Atimatim whereas the victim lives with her parents at Anloga, all suburbs of Kumasi.

She said on January 7, the accused paid a visit to his brother who stays in the same house with victim and parents. Chief Inspector Baffour-Keyi said the victim who was playing with her friends at about 1000 hours was lured by Opoku into his brother's room and forcibly had sex with her.

The girl who could not endure the pain started crying, which attracted a passer-by who happens to know the girl and recognized her voice and immediately informed the mother who was washing in front of the house.

The prosecution said the mother quickly rushed to the house and saw the door to Opoku's room locked.

He after several knocks on the door without response, sympathisers who were attracted to the scene forced the door opened and saw the accused struggling to put on his underwear.

Opoku was then arrested and handed over to the police after which a medical form was given to the victim to attend hospital, where it was confirmed that the victim had been defiled.
