Labourer jailed 12 months for indecent assault.

Wassa-Akropong (W/R) June 27 (credit Gunu s/ 336)-GNA-A 22-year-old farm labourer at Nsuopon in the Wassa Amenfi district was on Monday, sentenced to 12 month's imprisonment by the Wassa-Akropong Magistrate's Court for indecently assaulting a woman on her farm.

Alex Gyimah pleaded guilty to forcibly inserting his fingers into Mary Annin's private parts after she had refused Gyimah's overtures for sex. The Police Prosecutor, Chief Inspector Jonas Katapu, told the court presided over by Mr. Frank Komla Mensah that on February four this year, Mary hired the accused to work on her farm.

He said the accused took the lead to the farm while Mary prepared food, which she carried to him.

After taking the meal the accused demanded sex from Mary, which she refused because she was married and also because it was a taboo to have sex in the bush.

The Prosecutor said the accused, who was not convinced threatened Mary with a cutlass, overpowered her and inserted his fingers into her vagina several times.

He then seized Mary's panties and asked her to go for it in his house in the evening.

The Prosecutor said when Mary reported this to her parents, the accused apologised and gave the panties to them after which the matter was reported to the Police. Also at the court was Kojo Frimpong, a 30-year-old carpenter was sentenced to 18 month's imprisonment for stealing a spraying machine meant for the mass cocoa spraying exercise. The accused pleaded guilty to stealing the machine valued at four million cedis.

His accomplice, one Kwaku is still on the run. Chief Inspector Katapu said the complainant Maxwell Boafo after realising that one of the 24 spraying machines was missing reported it to the Police at Wassa-Akropong.

Boafo had a tip off that the accused and one Kwaku were offering the machine for sale at nearby Asesenso but could not find a buyer. Chief Inspector Katapu said they later took the machine to Diaso in the Central Region for sale but Frimpong was arrested while Kwaku managed to escape with the machine. 27 June 06
