A 25-year-old woman, Vera Asare, accused of allegedly pouring acid on her boyfriend, Daniel Omane, has been charged with manslaughter by the Koforidua District Magistrate Court ‘A’, presided over by Her Worship Nana Ama Depaa Fynn.
The case has since been referred to the Koforidua High Court for trial, with Vera to remain in police custody for two weeks before proceedings commence.
The family of the late Daniel Omane, who died on July 25, 2025, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital after months of battling injuries from the November 29, 2024, acid attack, is demanding justice. They are calling for full accountability from Vera, who is alleged to have carried out the act while Omane was asleep in his room.
According to investigators, the couple had a turbulent relationship characterised by frequent arguments and allegations of infidelity. Vera, who had moved in with Omane after the birth of their now three-year-old daughter, was reportedly jealous and often confronted women she suspected of flirting with him. Tensions between them escalated until Omane decided to end the relationship, which allegedly triggered the attack.
On the night of the incident, Vera is said to have entered Omane’s room and poured acid on him as he slept. His screams drew the attention of co-tenants, who rushed to his aid and later handed Vera over to the police. He was first treated at the Eastern Regional Hospital before being transferred to Korle Bu, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.
Vera was initially arrested and remanded but later granted bail to care for their child. Following Omane’s death, however, she was re-arrested and is now facing fresh charges, including murder. Investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have obtained the autopsy report from Korle Bu to strengthen the case. The Eastern Regional State Attorney, Emily Addo-Kyereh, has taken over prosecution.
The case has sparked outrage in Koforidua and beyond, with family members, sympathisers, and friends of the late Omane storming the court in branded T-shirts to show solidarity. In emotional interviews with the media, the family described their pain and urged the police and judiciary to ensure justice.
They said Daniel’s death has left a void that can never be filled, but they remain hopeful that justice will bring them closure.
The Koforidua High Court is expected to begin the full criminal trial on October 13, 2025.
