KNUST security arrests suspected armed robber

Kumasi, Feb. 19, GNA- Security personnel of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) last Wednesday arrested a suspected armed robber at the University but other managed to escape. The security personnel, however, retrieved one locally-manufactured pistol loaded with bullets, five rounds of cartridges and a black mask. Lieutenant-Colonel William Kofi Addo (rtd), head of KNUST security, who briefed the GNA about the arrest at the weekend in Kumasi, said at around 2030 hours last Wednesday, a taxi driver alerted the University security night patrol team that two armed men attempted to snatch his taxicab at the campus but he managed to escape.

He said the team went to the spot and immediately the suspected robbers saw the personnel, they took to their heals but one was arrested.

Lt-Col Addo said during a search on the suspect, five live cartridges, a black mask and a locally-manufactured pistol loaded with bullets were found on him.

He said during interrogation, the suspect mentioned his name as Kwasi Ananne from Togo and lived at Anloga in Kumasi. Lt-Col Addo said Ananne confessed being a member of a taxi stealing gang and other robbery syndicate at the campus and mentioned Kwame as the name of his accomplice.

The Head of security said the suspect has been handed over to the police for further investigation and commended the KNUST security personnel for the arrest.

Lt-Col Addo gave the assurance that the personnel would work extra hard to flush out criminals operating at the campus so that residents of the University community could live in peace.
